new moon.

Part 2 of 4 of the Twilight saga.

New Moon by Stephenie Meyer

Circa – 2006

Synopsis: This novel begins where Twilight left off – with Bella & Edward in love, and just starting their Senior year at Forks High School. Bella’s 18th birthday party is thrown by Edwards eccentric-shopaholic “sister” Alice {who incidentally can “see” the future}, despite her urgings to not have her birthday recognized. As it turns out, Bella’s urgings should have been followed, as Bella receives a cut causing the whole family – besides Edward & his “father” {Dr. Carlisle Cullen} to be triggered by the scent of her flowing blood. This event leaves their family in disarray fearing the protection of Bella & the treaty {”bite no humans”}. Edward, despite is love for Bella, tells her that he {and his family} are leaving, and that she will never see him again.

Bella is left distraught, heartbroken, empty – in a catatonic depressive cycle. Bella’s father – Charlie, in an attempt to break her from the cycle forces her to return to a normal life & urges her to go out with her school friends. In accordance with her fathers wishes demands, she returns to the town of Port Angeles to see a movie, Bella’s adventurous side takes her for a ride on a strangers motorbike, in which she hears dearest Edward’s voice, begging her not to be reckless. Bella takes this as a challenge, remembering/hearing his voice began to bring Bella back into the world. Bella befriends Jacob Black, a member of the Quileute tribe, and Bella’s partner in crime {who is secretly in love with her, and oh-yeah, he’s a werewolf}. Bella’s adventurous side lands her in the ER a few times & a near drowning brings Alice back into her life. Edward had heard of her experience {unknown of her rescue}, decides to take his life. Bella & Alice are determined to prevent the loss of Edward – flying to Italy, grand theft auto & making a mad dash through the bustling city of Volterra. A caveat to his rescue is that the Volteri demand that Bella becomes one of the Cullen’s because, she knows too much about the secrets of the Volteri & vampires. Edward is very unhappy about this & is determined to evade the Volteri instead of “changing her”. Bella insists that it will be safer for her & her family by being “changed”. Edward insists, the only way that he will change her is if she marries him.

Meyer’s once again writes a novel that forces the reader into the book, exploring every nook & cranny. The reader is strung along enduring page after page, introducing new characters and scenarios that leave the reader catching their breath at each new chapter. Meyer’s continues to base her books off of her love for the romantic tragedy of Romeo & Juliet, and throughout the novel it plays in the foreground of the readers minds as tension builds & the tragedy ensues. Though a good portion of the book is spent on the emotional pain that Bella feels when Edward abandons her – it is extremely well written and is really what this story is about. Most of the things that happen to Bella in New Moon are as a result of the overwhelming loss that she is trying to bear. Her friendship with Jacob has a doomed quality to it not only because he obviously loves her while she is in love with Edward but because he is a werewolf and he naturally hates all vampires. I can see these two {Edward & Jacob} vying for her eternal undying {pun intended} love, over the next few books.

I stayed up into the early hours of the day reading this book struggling to put it down when my eyelids became to heavy to continue. I highly recommend this read {but please read Twilight first}. And GO SEE THE MOVIE!!!

twilight.

Part 1 of the 4 series of the Twilight saga.

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

Circa – 2005

Synopsis: High school junior Bella Swan has recently relocated from living with her eccentric mother in sunny Phoenix to the overcast city of Forks, Washington with her Chief of Police father. In her attempts to make friends she is attracted to the ever so mysterious Edward Cullen. In his attempts to distance himself he conveniently drawn closer to her through a series of life endangering events that Bella continues to fall victim to. Bella is quickly swept off of her feet by Edward despite his looming mysterious disappearances from school & him appearing in her room night after night. Bella is drawn to him, his pale skin, his color changing eyes, his ability to read minds – well, everyone but her’s… his mysterious vampire “family”. Bella is quickly excepted into the Cullen family {”adopted” vampire children saved by Dr. & Mrs Cullen}, despite her mortality. Edward declares that although he is immortal & she is not, he does not want to live in a world where she does not exist within his life. However, her mortality catches up with her when she is tracked by a vampire who does not live by the “bite no humans” treaty. Bella becomes his one desire, which creates the ultimate challenge for the Cullen family – protect the human.

Honestly, I was never drawn into this book until I was invited by my friends to see the movie, “New Moon”{the second book in the saga}, I had seen the first and enjoyed it – however I was told that it wouldn’t be able to be “completely enjoyed” without reading these books. So, without a second thought I ran off to the Library and picked up the first copy that I could track down. I was quickly drawn into these books and ended up reading ALL FOUR within a 7.2 day time-spread. What can I say, I am addicted to reading – once I get into a book, I can’t put it down.

Meyer’s creates a wonderful storyline & has excellent character development, one that is rivaled by J.R. Tolkien & Dan Brown. Her books draw the reader in – mesmerized, gripped, determined to guess what they will see on the next page. She leaves the reader begging for more & advancing page-by-page unable to put the book down for longer than a few hours. She creates a suspenseful novel with a delightful blend of romance & horror. Playing off of her love for Romeo & Juliet – Meyer’s creates a tale of two starstruck lovers who are a dangerous pair with her morality & his vampire thirst for her blood. The writing is an appropriate balance of love with the traditional morality of homegrown family values – abstinence. This is an amazing feat on her part, as not many authors are able to pull off a value ridden love story and still have it reach the top of the best sellers list internationally. I stayed up into the early hours of the morning indulging in this novel {I highly doubt that I am the first to do this… haha}. I highly recommend this read.

with thanks.

Its Thanksgiving 2009 peeps! Wow, this year has flown by incredibly fast hasn’t it? Its that time again for tryptophan to flood the bodies of our loved ones and gain a pound or two within a few hour eating course – preferably on pie alone.

As you have probably seen in prior posts, I am not a fan of thanksgiving. Not saying I am not thankful for the 9 million awesome people in my life, my stellar family, rocking bod, handsome man & gracious God. I am not a grinch or something creepy & evil like that, nor do I have a hate for all things jolly & bright – so hear me out ok?! There is just something about this holiday that sends me off my rocker. No, its not coordinating meal plans & who is at who’s house when – although that part is particularly pesky nuance of this season. Nor is it the semblance of family togetherness as we all are tightly packed around the dinning room table. Perhaps it is my abhorrent distaste for smell of turkey that sends me looming into the possibility of becoming a vegan. Of course this holiday would be much easier if I was someone a bit less mental. But yet, here I sit, preparing for this ever so dreaded holiday, forcing my number counting OCD, that has threatened to kill me time-and-time-again; into its little box at the back of my mind – praying ever so fervently that it stays reclused for the remainder of the holiday season rest of my life {a girl can wish, right?}.

“Just like Jon Stewart I’m going to celebrate thanksgiving the traditional American way, I’m going to invite all my neighbors over, kill them and take their land. And afterward I’m going to pretend like nothing happened and there is no such thing as white privilege.”
